HARRY’S® FRESH FOODS CHALLENGES OTHER PORTLAND
COMPANIES
TO MATCH THEIR HOLIDAY SPIRIT BY DONATING TO BIRCH COMMUNITY SERVICES
PORTLAND, OR – DECEMBER 20, 2011 – Harry’s Fresh Foods, manufacturer
of hand-crafted, restaurant-quality, refrigerated ready-to-eat soups, entrées,
sides and desserts today announced it would donate 35,000 pounds of green bean
casserole to the Birch Community Services to help families in need this holiday
season.
“Harry’s understands that there are many local families just trying to
do the best they can this holiday season and we want to pitch in and help,”
said CEO Tony Muscato. “We’d like to challenge other local, Portland
companies to join in and make a difference this holiday. Taking care of our
community is a priority for Harry’s.”
Six truckloads of the holiday favorite, or enough to serve about 150,000,
will be on its way to the Birch warehouse this week. The donation, valued at
more than $100,000, will ensure that this warm, comfort food item is on the
table for holiday dinners throughout the greater Portland area.
This effort caps off a donation year for Harry’s that saw donations of
nearly 125,000 pounds of soups, entrées and side dishes contributed on a
regular basis to a combination of community programs, including Birch Community
Services.

About Birch Community Services
Birch Community Services serves working, poor families in the
Portland/Vancouver area. Last year, more than 6 Million pounds of product was
passed through Birch to needy families. Thousands of hard-working Oregon
families are caught in a bind: they earn too much to qualify for government
assistance and many private social-service programs, yet they are constantly
having to make choices between buying enough groceries or paying the rent.
Birch Community Services provides a hand up not a hand out, preserving the
dignity of each participant. Families pay a nominal monthly service fee and
many are expected to volunteer a few hours monthly toward program operations,
which provides an opportunity to help others. Accountability is emphasized, as
families are encouraged to take classes on financial management, supported in
setting goals and provided assistance in planning for a better future.
